The Opportunity

Boeing Defence Australia (BDA) is helping shape the future of aerospace through the MQ-28 Ghost Bat program, a globally significant capability for the Australian Defence Force. The MQ-28 Production Facility at Wellcamp will support the manufacturing and assembly of this next-generation collaborative uncrewed combat air vehicle.

BDA is seeking an EHS Specialist to support the delivery of safety, health and environmental excellence across the MQ-28 Production Facility. In this role, you will work closely with engineering, operations, facilities and program teams to help identify hazards, support risk controls, and contribute to a safe, compliant and efficient workplace.

This role is suited to a professional who is developing their experience in EHS within a manufacturing, industrial or project environment, and who is ready to contribute to safety-in-design, site fit-out, commissioning support and ongoing EHS operations.  The role will support the early factory fit-out phase, including plant and equipment installation and commissioning activities. You will assist with EHS review processes, inspections, risk assessments, incident follow-up and environmental, health and safety compliance activities.  Once the facility is operational, you will continue to support the maintenance and improvement of EHS performance under Boeing's safety management system and help build a positive, safety-first culture.

Why this is exciting

  • Be part of Boeing's first Australian manufacturing facility in 50 years and contribute to the development of a modern, state-of-the-art site.
  • Support a highly visible defence program that combines advanced aerospace systems, autonomy and innovative production approaches.
  • Help shape safe and sustainable manufacturing practices from the ground up in a brand-new facility.

What you'll get to do

  • Support reviews of plant layout, workflow and facility configuration to help enable safe movement of people and materials, effective segregation, machine guarding and emergency egress.
  • Assist with safety-in-design and other key review processes during installation and commissioning of manufacturing equipment and systems.
  • Contribute to process safety activities, including support for hazardous materials handling, storage and environmental protection requirements.
  • Support industrial hygiene activities such as noise, air quality, lighting, thermal comfort and ergonomics assessments.
  • Review drawings, 3D models and facility designs to identify potential EHS impacts and improvement opportunities.
  • Work with production, engineering, facilities and program teams to help develop EHS management plans, risk assessments and site procedures.
  • Participate in inspections, audits and incident investigations, and support corrective and preventive action tracking.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of site EHS programs, standards, procedures and training.
  • Monitor and report on compliance with EHS requirements and contribute to the identification of emerging risks.
  • Support review of new regulations, industry standards and guidance, and help assess their impact on the program.
  • Contribute to the development of a collaborative, safety-first culture in a new and dynamic manufacturing environment.

Who we're looking for

  • Tertiary qualification in Health, Safety, Environment, Engineering or a related discipline, plus approximately 2-5 years' experience in EHS, industrial safety, design safety, manufacturing or similar environments; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Exposure to or experience supporting design and fit-out activities, such as safety-in-design, plant/equipment installation or commissioning.
  • Basic-to-strong understanding of factory layout and risk management, including safe movement of people and materials, ergonomics, emergency egress, machine guarding and segregation of hazardous activities.
  • Understanding of facility systems such as HVAC, fire suppression, electrical and waste management, with a focus on EHS compliance.
  • Experience supporting hazardous materials and chemical management, including storage, handling, labelling and spill response.
  • Awareness of industrial hygiene principles such as noise, air quality, thermal comfort, lighting and ergonomics.
  • Experience participating in incident investigations, root-cause analysis and tracking corrective actions.
  • Familiarity with ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 frameworks.
  • Working knowledge of Australian WHS and environmental legislation, regulatory obligations and reporting requirements.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to work across teams and communicate clearly.
  • Good time-management and prioritisation skills, with the ability to balance competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Willingness to be on-site at Wellcamp.
  • Ability to meet Defence security and ITAR requirements; eligibility for and willingness to obtain relevant defence clearances is required.

Other desirable criteria

  • Working knowledge of the Defence or aerospace industry.
  • Experience in manufacturing, industrial or project-based environments.
  • Exposure to design reviews, constructability reviews or engineering safety processes.
  • Security requirement
  • Applicants must be Australian Citizens to meet defence security requirements.
