The Opportunity
Boeing Defence Australia (BDA) is seeking a Senior Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist to join the AH-64 Apache sustainment and support team.  You will lead and strengthen EHS performance for the Apache program, embedded within the Commonwealth Attack Helicopter Systems Program Office (AHSPO).

You will be based at Gallipoli Barracks, Enoggera, Brisbane, QLD, but may have the occasional travel to Townsville.

Why this is exciting

  • This role will be responsible for shaping, implementing and continuously improving the program's EHS management framework. Acting as the WHS Manager within the AHSPO program office, you will provide expert advice and leadership to support safe, compliant and environmentally responsible program outcomes across acquisition, introduction into service and sustainment activities.
  • This is a key role for a proactive EHS professional who can operate in a highly regulated Defence environment, influence stakeholders, and ensure robust systems are in place to manage health, safety and environmental risks associated with the Apache capability.
  • Be part of a multi-disciplinary team delivering hands-on maintenance, systems engineering, supply and test activities with direct operational impact.

Why This Role Matters

This is more than compliance support — it is a role where your EHS expertise directly contributes to the safe introduction, operation and sustainment of a critical defence capability. You will help ensure people are protected, risks are controlled, and environmental obligations are met while supporting one of Australia's most important military aviation programs.

What you'll get to do

  • Lead the development, implementation and maintenance of the Apache Program's WHS and environmental management arrangements.
  • Identify, assess and manage workplace, operational and environmental hazards associated with Apache aircraft, support systems and program activities.
  • Provide expert advice to the Apache Program Manager and stakeholders on compliance with Australian WHS, environmental and defence regulatory requirements.
  • Support the program in meeting EHS obligations for Boeing embedded personnel and Commonwealth interfaces.
  • Act as a key point of contact for WHS matters in conjunction with the Material Safety Engineer, including liaison with regulatory agencies and AVNCOMD on aviation safety and hazard management.
  • Undertake program reviews, audits and incident investigations, and recommend corrective and preventive actions to reduce risk and prevent recurrence.
  • Contribute EHS input to system changes, change impact assessments and transition activities across the enterprise.
  • Deliver EHS education, awareness and training to support regulatory, contractual and business requirements.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory changes and assess their impact on program operations and compliance obligations.
  • Support co-located site EHS specialists through hazard evaluations, guidance and consistency of approach.
  • Work closely with the Test and Evaluation team and assist in establishing acquisition EHS deliverables for transition into sustainment under AHSPO direction.
  • Promote a strong safety culture and proactive risk management mindset across the program.

Who we're looking for
You are an experienced EHS professional with a strong background in operational and highly regulated environments. You are confident working independently, partnering with stakeholders at all levels, and applying practical EHS solutions that support both compliance and operational effectiveness.

  • Tertiary qualification in Health, Safety and Environment with at least 5 years' EHS experience in an operational environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with minimal direction and exercise sound judgment in setting priorities, objectives and approaches.
  • Thorough knowledge of Australian WHS and environmental legislation, regulations and reporting requirements.
  • Strong experience in a customer-focused environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.
  • Strong time management and prioritisation skills, with the ability to manage competing demands in a regulated environment.
  • Experience in the defence or aerospace industry.
  • Demonstrated experience operating in a highly regulated environment.

Security requirement

  • Applicants must be Australian Citizens to meet defence security requirements.
