The Opportunity
Boeing Defence Australia (BDA) is seeking a Tooling Maintenance Lead to join the MQ‑28 Ghost Bat Production Facility, test and in‑service support team based at Wellcamp (Toowoomba), Queensland.

Program overview
The MQ‑28 Ghost Bat is a next‑generation collaborative uncrewed combat air vehicle concept designed to operate alongside crewed aircraft to extend surveillance, force projection and survivability. The program advances Australia's sovereign autonomous aviation capability through development, integration, flight test and sustainment of advanced sensors, mission systems and autonomy software.

This role requires strong Mechanical skills, technical expertise, and a deep understanding of Manufacturing / production processes. The Tooling Maintenance Lead will ensure that all the assembly and fabrication tooling and associated assets, are maintained to the highest standards, meet regulatory requirements, and support efficient and safe production operations whilst minimising production downtime. Reporting to the Facility Maintenance Manager, this individual will be a trusted self-starter that can operate autonomously in a matrix environment. You will be the key point of contact and engage with local site management, service providers and contractors whilst working with local teams to ensure a safe and compliant work environment is provided to our employees. You will have the skills, knowledge, and understanding to develop the required scope of works, along with the ability to develop relationships with suppliers and business stakeholders.

As a Tooling Maintenance Lead at Boeing you will:

  • Assist in Developing and implementing Tooling management strategies and procedures to optimize production operations and ensure a safe and efficient working environment.
    • Oversee and carry out the maintenance, repair, and modifications of all assembly tooling, fabrication tooling and tool crib tooling across the facility
    • Coordinate with internal stakeholders, such as Production Leads and engineering teams, to identify facility needs and implement necessary changes or upgrades.
    • Monitor equipment performance and implement corrective actions to address any issues or inefficiencies.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections and audits to identify potential hazards and implement corrective measures.
    • Collaborate with the safety and compliance teams to ensure adherence to all relevant aviation regulations, industry standards, and company policies.
    • Provides guidance to less experienced employees. Provides training to peers and/or customers on the use of equipment.
  • Mentor and grow a vibrant, high‑performing manufacturing team in a brand‑new facility.

Who we're looking for

  • 5+ years experience as a Mechanical Fitter & Machinist.
  • 3+ years' experience working in a fast paced manufacturing environment.
  • Strong general maintenance knowledge for tooling and understanding of preventative maintenance and asset management strategies
  • Previous experience working in a large matrix organization
  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing production processes, regulations, and safety standards
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Experience dealing with senior stakeholders and translating operational requirements into actionable deliverables  
  • Coordinated with cross-functional teams and external contractors to deliver planned and reactive maintenance activities on schedule, maintaining quality standards and minimising operational downtime.
  • Strong relationship building and stakeholder management skills
  • Previous work experience on an asset management system (Cribmaster & Cognos highly regarded)
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and allocate resources effectively and efficiently
  • Collaborative mindset, excellent communication skills and a drive to mentor others.
  • Willingness to be based at Wellcamp with occasional travel to suppliers and Boeing sites.
