The Opportunity
Boeing Defence Australia is on a mission: keep Australia's most capable airlift and attack rotorcraft ready, safe and mission‑effective. We're looking for an experienced Senior Aerospace Mechanical & Structures Engineer to lead engineering delivery for the CH-47F Chinook program — a role that puts you at the heart of high‑tempo, safety‑critical defence capability.
Location: Gallipoli Barracks, Enoggera, Brisbane, QLD (hybrid work arrangement)
Why this is exciting
- Work on iconic rotorcraft that matter in real operations — your engineering decisions will directly support ADF missions.
- Lead high-impact repairs, modifications and sustainment engineering that keep aircraft flying and crews safe.
- Join a multidisciplinary team where your technical leadership shapes outcomes across engineering, production and customer engagement.
- Balance focused on-life work with hybrid flexibility — do great work and stay grounded.
Your mission (key responsibilities)
- Lead structural analysis, design, modification and repair activities for airframe and mission equipment on CH-47 platforms.
- Manage payload integration for mission systems (cargo-handling equipment, sling systems, electro-mechanical winches, mission cabins, armor and special equipment).
- Develop and review engineering change proposals, structural substantiation, load cases and damage tolerance assessments.
- Perform finite element analysis (FEA), fatigue and residual strength assessments; advise on repairs and life-extension actions.
- Support airworthiness and certification processes in accordance with Defence/Airworthiness standards and regulatory frameworks.
- Coordinate test programmes (ground and flight), review test reports, and implement findings into engineering solutions.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers; liaise with suppliers, OEMs and cross-functional teams (Sustainment, Avionics, Safety, Quality).
- Maintain engineering configuration control and documentation aligned with quality and compliance systems.
What you need to be considered:
- Tertiary qualification in Aerospace, Mechanical or Structural Engineering (Bachelor's minimum; Master's preferred).
- Minimum 8-12 years' relevant aviation/rotorcraft structural engineering experience; direct CH-47 or tandem-rotor experience highly desirable.
- Proven experience with composite and metallic airframe structures, repairs, and payload integration.
- Rotorcraft experience is a strong advantage.
- Knowledge of fatigue/damage tolerance, fracture mechanics and structural test methods.
- Familiarity with airworthiness standards, certification processes and Defence engineering practices.
- Experience with systems integration for payloads such as cargo hooks, winches, auxiliary fuel, and mission equipment.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder management and problem-solving skills.
- Outstanding communicator who thrives in a multi‑discipline environment.
Applicants must be Australian Citizens to meet Defence security requirements.
